Like most young couples, Hung’s parents dreamed of one day having children and forming a family of their own. However, when that day finally arrived, they found an unexpected surprise; their first child, Hung, was born with a cleft lip. Hung’s mother told us she felt a profound sadness when her son was born, but was determined to love him just as he was.
Months went by and Hung’s family continued to love and nurture him as best they could despite the underlying sadness of knowing they could not afford help for their child. Then, one day, Hung’s father heard that ReSurge was coming to Phan Rang, Vietnam, to perform free surgeries to children in need. The young couple and their son set off on a long journey from their remote village to the hospital.
When Hung was selected for surgery his parents were torn between great relief and fear for their child undergoing the operation. They held each other and watched as Hung was taken away for surgery. Hung’s surgery was a great success, and he peacefully stayed his required night in the hospital. With his parents by his side, Hung closed his eyes and fell asleep; this was the first night of the rest of his life.
Born with a cleft lip, Hung didn’t have an easy start in life. As his parents held him proudly for a picture on their way out of the hospital, we knew we had offered Hung a new beginning. However, a united family and love – that, he has always had.
