Rita Lonhart, Assistant Director of Operations for the Stanford Institute for Innovation in Developing Economies (SEED), in Nepal
As you may recall, last month we announced that ReSurge and our Global Burn Project have been chosen as a project partner with Stanford University's Design for Extreme Affordability course, in which students learn to design products and services that will change the lives of the world’s poorest citizens.
A few weeks ago, Rita Lonhart, Assistant Director of Operations for the Stanford Institute for Innovation in Developing Economies (SEED), traveled to Nepal as a representative of the course to visit our Surgical Outreach Program there and to meet with our partner, Dr. Shankar Man Rai. Please see the following reflection she wrote after returning from the trip:
I had the opportunity to visit Dr. Rai's team in Nepal this past December representing Stanford University's Design for Extreme Affordability course. Our course is partnering with ReSurge with the goal of creating products or services that aim to serve burn patients in Nepal.
Our course is a multidisciplinary project based class in which students design products or services that will change the lives of the world's poorest citizens. We use user-centered design to find simple and elegant solutions to big problems facing NGOs around the world. This year, our partnership with ReSurge will provide the exciting opportunity for two teams of four students to support an organization that is making a real impact every day in Nepal.
My opportunity to work with ReSurge and Dr. Rai's team in Nepal was an opportunity of a lifetime. To gain an on-the-ground perspective of burn victims and understand the organizations that support Dr. Rai and his team was an invaluable experience. Dr. Rai's work is inspiring and life changing. Even in my short time in and around Kathmandu, I am touched by the country and the spirit of its people. I am looking forward to a fruitful and long-lasting partnership between ReSurge and the Design for Extreme Affordability class.
We at ReSurge are very excited about our partnership with Extreme and look forward to collaborating with the students over the next few months. Stay tuned for more updates from this exciting partnership!
