Not only do we have a team on the ground in Vietnam, but some of our other volunteers have made their way to India for a visiting educator (VE) trip. Plastic surgeon Tom Huntsman (Fly Creek, NY) and occupational therapist Shannon Grady (Morgan Hill, CA) have teamed up with Dr. Dhanesh Desai, a general surgeon with whom we have been working, to facilitate trainings on burn care at Vaatsalya Hospital in Gadag, a district in the south west state of Karnataka. Chris Canter, our chief development officer, is also accompanying the team to Gadag. This is the second VE trip ReSurge has sent to Gadag to work with Dr. Desai and his team.
Tom is working with Dr. Desai to train him on treating a broader range of burn scar contractures, while Shannon is working with the nursing staff at the hospital on basic burn rehabilitation skills. They are both teaching using a combination of hands-on training techniques and lectures. Fifteen patients have already attended their burn camp, and 12 were accepted for surgery during the time the VE team will be there. Trips like these are key to forwarding our objectives of creating lasting, sustainable access to quality care for survivors of burn injuries. We wish the team a great rest of their trip, and a big thanks to Chris Canter for the update and pictures!
