ReSurge volunteer nurse Celeste McCartney, from Berkeley, California, expresses her joy in arriving in Managua with all of the medical equipment and supplies needed to perform transforming surgeries.
Cessie Spearing, ReSurge communications and advocacy coordinator
After a lengthy day of traveling which began at 3:30 a.m., we arrived with equipment intact and the team in high spirits. Approximately 40 cases have already been identified for potential surgeries and others will be slated during clinic day. ReSurge’s partner Dr. Mario Perez said that we should prepared to see up to 100 potential patients.
I feel very lucky to be part of a team of seasoned veterans--every member has been on at least a handful of trips with ReSurge with some having volunteered with ReSurge since the 1990s. As this is a "hybrid" trip, our lineup will include a team from Nicaragua led by our partner surgeon, Mario Perez, M.D. (Managua, Nicaragua), but other key team members will be: plastic surgeons Steve Garner, M.D. (Santa Cruz, CA) and Humberto Briceno, M.D. (Managua, Nicaragua); anesthesiologists Mike Beach, M.D. (Hanover, NH) and Loan Minh Diem Le, M.D. (Newport, CA); pediatrician Alice Truscott, M.D. (Berkeley, CA); nurses Celeste McCartney, R.N. (Berkeley, CA) and Wendell Alderson, R.N. (Sacremento, CA); and trip coordinators/translators Dora Rusin-Gomez, M.D. (Palo Alto, CA) and Ivette Icaza, M.D. (Managua, Nicaragua) and ReSurge communications staff member Cessie Spearing (San Francisco, CA).
Excited about clinic day. More then.
