Mambo, everyone! Greetings from Tanzania.
ReSurge currently has a small team of volunteers and staff doing a site visit in Mwanza, a city in northern Tanzania on the shores of Lake Victoria. Anesthesiologist Dr. Bonnie MacEvoy from California and plastic surgeon Dr. Chris Conner from Texas - both veteran medical volunteers with ReSurge - arrived in Mwanza this weekend to carry out the site visit. They are jonied by Cessie Spearing, ReSurge's Communications and Advocacy Coordinator, who before coming to ReSurge lived in Tanzania for several years.
The purpose of the site visit to Tanzania is to visit and assess two hospitals in Mwanza and one in Itigi, a city in the central part of the country. In addition to assessing the hospital facilities, the three site visitors will be meeting with local physicians and hospital administrators to discuss opportunities for future collaboration with ReSurge.
The team spent their first day at Bugando Medical Centre speaking with general surgeon Dr. Geofrey Giiti and other officials at the hospital.
They also toured the hospital, beginning with the wards and ending with a thorough walk-through of the five operating rooms.
The next day, Dr. Giiti took them to nearby Sekou-Toure Referral Hospital in Mwanza, where he has established a pilot pediatric burn unit with support from outside groups.
"It is impossible not to admire Dr. Giiti's dogged efforts to address such a massive problem," Cessie reported after touring the burn ward.
We are grateful to Chris and Bonnie for being wonderful advocates of ReSurge and for their time and expertise on this trip. We look forward to keeping you all updated as their site visit progresses!
